FURY AWARDS 17-18 FURY FLOSS TO RECORD!

FURY BC celebrated its 26th season at its Annual Awards Night on Friday 8th June and the fact it now, has 200 players in 16 teams. The big winners on the night were S&C Coach Wai Mun Lee –Outstanding Service to the club award; Jenna Beattie – the Club Player of the Year, with the Junior Men’s team winning Team of the Year and their Coach Keith Bunyan – Coach of the Year. Alex Johnson –the club’s official photographer was Volunteer of the Year with Eabha Kerr and Jake Cavanagh voted the Stars of the Future. The night saw special guest Simon Hosannah, whose organisation has been involved in basketball entertainment throughout the world, the NBA, Euroleague and the BBL to name a few, did commentary during the Awards Night shoot –out challenge that saw 8 teams of all age groups battle to be crowned top team of the night. But the Awards and that contest were almost overshadowed by the players who took part in Fury’s ‘FLOSS’ contest that saw some amazing performances- more on that later! The event which took place at Grangemouth Town Hall also saw the club honor 4 of its former players – Kieron Achara, Jonny Bunyan, Ali Fraser and Fraser Malcolm for their fantastic performances for Scotland Senior MENS team in the Commonwealth Games in Australia, where the team finished 4th just losing to New Zealand in the Bronze medal match. Jonny Bunyan was on hand to accept his award with MC Tommy Thomson confirming the other 3 were out the country – ‘for tax reasons’! Jonny and Simon made the presentations during the evening which saw 160 in attendance. The buffet was provided to its usual high standard from Paul O’Donnell. The 29 former and current Fury players who have represented Scotland over the past year were also highlighted.

FULL AWARDS LIST FOR 17-18

The Clubs PLAYER of the YEAR was JENNA BEATTIE – who had her best ever season, with outstanding performances throughout 17-18 for Fury Woman. Jenna, a full time dentist, was named in what was almost an entirely Caledonia Pride based Scottish Woman’s Squad in 17-18. Jenna is also the clubs U12 Boys Coach and true role model for the woman’s game.

The Clubs VOLUNTEER of the YEAR was ALEX JOHNSON, a true volunteer who commits to taking photos at all Fury teams fixtures throughout the season and has done now for many years.

The TEAM of the YEAR was FURY JUNIOR MEN who won the 17-18 Division 1 Championship and the Scottish Cup with 11 of the 12 players having played in Scotland squads.

Club COACH of the YEAR was Fury Junior Men 1’s coach KEITH BUNYAN who guided the side to the Scottish League and Cup double. Keith as usual, committed to his Junior side, while still playing a key role in the Men’s team. Keith on the night shared his success with JM Assistant Coach Ewan Carlow, a committed contributor in the JM program.

The Clubs INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS of the YEAR – an award that extends from current to former Fury players was awarded to the Fury Commonwealth Games 4 – Kieron Achara, Jonny Bunyan Ali Fraser and Fraser Malcolm. All 4 were starting 5 players for the Scotland team in all 9 of their games in OZ – a great testimony to the players and the club.

MARGARET BUNYAN MEMORIAL Trophy – winner WAI MUN LEE awarded to a player/supporter/official who has given outstanding service to the club or achieved outstanding results in basketball – trophy donated many seasons ago by your typical basketball parent/grandparent! Wai has worked with Fury Basketball for over 15 seasons. A strength and conditioning coach at Forth Valley College, Wai helped develop CG stars Jonny Bunyan, Ali Fraser and Fraser Malcolm and has worked with Fury teams and players in the Clubs Sportscotland DCI program over the past 4 seasons. He is currently working with the club’s u14 Girls and the energy and positive reaction from all who have worked with Wai over 15 years, is a testimony to his ability and commitment to the club. Fury Headcoach John Bunyan paid tribute to Wai – citing him as one of the key reasons the club has produced so many quality players – “ he has helped give them that extra physical edge ‘.

The Clubs STARS OF THE FUTURE Awards for male and female players, went to Jake Cavanagh and Eabha Kerr, both recently selected to the current Scotland U16 teams who will be competing in Europe this summer. Jake an athletic forward and Eabha a promising tall point guard have both shown they have it takes to become great players as they progress in the game.

Fury’s U14 Boys and Girls teams who recently competed at Monsterball in Inverness with great success, were also recognised at the Awards Ceremony for their performances.

The Basketball Shoot-Out event held throughout proceedings saw the combined u16/u18 girls win the event and also win tickets to the forthcoming Great Britain Games.

But for many the star turns of the night were the players who, from all age groups who took to the stage to perform the dance craze known as ‘The FLOSS’. 5 of those taking part were outstanding and a dramatic ‘FLOSS OFF’ saw U10 player Jay Bunyan, U12 players Jack Rafferty and Rachael Dagger and U14 players Ben Adams and Rowan Brockie perform at max ‘Floss’ in an effort to win a pair of signed ‘Dwyane Wade’ basketball boots. For judge Simon, the contest was so tight he declared Jay and Rowan joint winners and promised he would find two pairs of NBA legend Wade boots. All 5 received tickets for the up and coming Great Britain Men’s games at the Emirates Arena. Simon will be hosting the event and is seriously considering signing up the FURY FLOSS 5 for the event!
