FURY & SAINTS SHARE OPENING SEASON WOMAN'S GAMES
Sony Centre Fury SW were defeated 53 to 31 against St. Mirren, however the clubs Junior Woman defeated the Paisley side 40-36 in the U18 match. Both the Scottish Division 1 games were held at Grangemouth SC with Fury Woman going behind in the opening quarter 15-9 despite little between the teams for most of that period. Kirstie Young and Katie McEwan had opened the scoring for the Sony sponsored side with Kim Flockhart then adding a 3 and McEwan’s Junior teammate – Pelly Kidd also scoring in the first quarter. However with Fury failing to execute at all on offence in the second period, Saints took a commanding 18pt lead into the second half of the game. Fury however dug deep and on several occasions looked as though they could get the game back to single figures. A third and fourth period of 13-11 and 11-9 to Saints showed defences were on top but also meant the second half was only a 4pt difference, a much improved performance for the Falkirk team in that second half. Back to back threes from Ailie Gardiner and great all round play from Junior Pelly Kidd were a feature of the second half. Fury can look to the fact that 4 of their team were unavailable including the former WBBL player Gill Baird and Rebecca Lonsdale and the influential Alicia McFadden. The Junior Woman secured a low scoring home win over Saints with Pelly Kidd, fresh from her exertions in the SW in the game beforehand, stepping up with a solid display at both ends of the floor and 12pts. Molly Waddell with 10pts also had a great game for Fury , with Katie McEwan on 8. Fury JW were also missing some key players who were taking part in a tournament in England, so getting the 4pt win over a key rival was a great start to Kim Flockhart’s side for the new season. The game was close all the way an special mention to CW 2 player –Eve Balloch, who came into the side and hit back to back baskets as soon as she hit the floor.
