FURY went into the 1st Round of the 19-20 U14 Scottish Cups at both Boys and Girls as Holders after last season’s historic double win gave the Falkirk club both titles. Their opening round opponents were both in the shape of capital side Boroughmuir Blaze. Fury took the win in the Girls match after a hard fought contest at the Crags SC in Edinburgh. The Falkirk side led 19-10 at the end of the first period with Captain Freya Melrose leading her side with 10 personal. U13 Point Guard Rose Tyrell had 7pts in the first as Fury looked in control. The second saw the teams tie at 10 apiece, Fury retaining the 10pt gap at the half. Melrose and Tyrell shared 8 with Jodie Girvan chipping in with 2. The third saw Fury edge the lead out to 12, with Eidie McBain hitting 8 personal in a great spell from the left hander. Bailey Black was also producing solid defensive minutes and added 4 personal in the third. Fury took the final stanza 16-12 for a 16pt win and a place in the quarter-finals. 8 personal from Melrose in this period took her tally to a game high 22pts. Rose Tyrell, despite foul trouble finished on 13 with Edie McBain on 10. The Fury Boys team played their opening tie in front of a large crowd at Grangemouth Sports Centre, in a match that was never more than a basket between the sides for all bar the last 2 minutes of the game. That final spell proved decisive as Blaze stretched out to a 9pt win. There was great basketball from both sides and several very talented players on show. Jack Shand showed why he plays for Fury’s U16 Scottish Div1 side with a fantastic 25pt display. John Crozier produced some solid plays on offence with 9 personal. While Fury were outsized they were in contention throughout. The Falkirk side led 11-7 in a low scoring opening quarter with Blaze turning it around in the second to lead by 2 at the half. The teams tied the third 14 apiece, with neither side able to break the other. The final two minutes were key as Blaze took the lead by 4 and went on for a 9pt win that may well see them with the start of a run to the Final. Greg Foussas’s side will look to continue the great work they have been doing and will without doubt challenge for a spot and contention in the National Challenge later in the season.
